Wearing Shamballa Bracelets

Question:

Are shamballa bracelets haraam? My intentions are not to wear them as a religious sign just as jewelry. I don't even think they practice that ritual any more.

Since shamballa bracelets uniquely come from the Buddhist religion then wearing it is haraam, because it is established in sharee’ah that it is haraam to imitate the enemies of Allaah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

It involves imitating the kuffaar, then wearing it is haraam, even for those who do not wear it with any intention of imitating the kuffaar, because imitating them may happen in one’s clothing and appearance, whether one intends to resemble them or not, as was explained by Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) in al-Qawl al-Mufeed (3/203).

With regard to examining the intention before denouncing evil, whatever is proven to be evil according to sharee’ah must be denounced, and the intention of the one who does it does not matter, because a good intention does not turn an evil deed into a good one. Evil is evil even if the person intends something good thereby.

Wearing it as just a jewelry in that case you are still resembling those who wear them for a haraam purpose, so you exposes yourself to suspicion and gossip, as people will think that you are wearing them for that haraam purpose. And there may be an even worse consequence, as other women may follow your example, especially if you are in a position of respect.

Wearing Amulets (taweez) to ward of Evil Eye or Nazar is a Minor Shirk

It is not permissible to wear amulets even if they are from the Holy Qur’aan, because of the general meaning of the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

“Whoever wears an amulet, may Allaah not fulfil his need, and whoever wears a sea-shell, may Allaah not give him peace.”
Narrated by Ahmad (17440); classed as hasan by Shu’ayb al-Arna’oot in Tahqeeq al-Musnad.

And he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk.”
This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’.

If amulets contain Qur’aan, then there is a difference of scholarly opinion concerning them. The more correct view is that they are not allowed, because of the general meaning of the evidence, and so as to ward off the means (that may lead to shirk). And that is also because of the disrespect to which they are exposed in most cases, because the wearer sleeps wearing the amulet, and enters the toilet wearing it, and so on.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (1/212): The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is haraam to wear amulets if they contain something other than Qur’aan, but they differed concerning those that contain Qur’aan. Some of them allowed wearing them and some of them did not allow that. The view that it is not allowed is more correct, because of the general meaning of the ahaadeeth and so as to ward off the means (that may lead to shirk).
