Muslim Names: Men not be given the attributes of Allah

Tawheed Al-Asmaa Was-Sifaat requires that man not be given the attributes of Allah.

In maintaining the unity of Allah’s names, Allah’s names cannot be given to His creation unless Abd comes before His name. Abd meaning “slave of” or “servant of”.

Names such as Ra’oof and Raheem are allowable names for men because Allah has used them to refer to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam):

“A messenger has come to you from amongst yourselves to whom anything which burdens you is grievous. He is full of concern for you and is full of pity (Ra’oof) and full of mercy (Raheem).”
[Surah at-Tawbah 9:128]

But names such as Ar-Ra’oof (the One Most Full of Pity) and Ar- Raheem (the Most Merciful) represents a level of perfection which can only belong to Allah and it can only be used to refer to men if Abd is written before the names such as Abdur-Ra’oof or Abdur-Raheem.

Also, names like Abdur-Rasool (slave of the messenger), Abdur-Nabee (slave of the Prophet), Abdul-Husayn (slave of Husayn), etc., where people name themselves slaves to other than Allah are also not allowed. Based on this principle, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) forbade Muslims from referring to those put under their charge as Abdee (my slave) or Amatee (my slave girl).

MISCONCEPTION: Muslims worship a different God

Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Allah for Muslims is the greatest and most inclusive of the Names of God, it is an Arabic word of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and ascribing no partners to Him. It is exactly the same word, which the Jews, in Hebrew, use for God (Eloh). Aramaic the language Jesus spoke, Allaha is the word for God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; Allah is the same God worshiped
by Muslims, Christians and Jews.

It is interesting to note that Arabic, Malay, Indonesian translations of the Bible use the word Allah to mean God. Both Arab Jews and Christians use the word Allah to mean the Creator.

Muslims believe that Allah's sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history. However, it should be noted that God in Islam is One and Only. He, the Exalted, does not get tired, does not have a son (i.e. Jesus or have associates) nor does He have human-like attributions as found in other faiths.

“Say: He is God the One and Only;
God the Eternal Absolute;
He begets not nor is He begotten;
And there is none like unto Him.”

Who Is Your Rabb?

Our Rabb is Allah – the One Who has the sole right to be worshipped, the Merciful (Ar-Rahman), the Creator (Al-Khaaliq), the Provider and Sustainer (Ar-Razzak), the All-Knowing (Al-Aleem) and the All-Loving (Al-Wadood).

The Heavens and the Earth is the greatest and most remarkable of His creation. The most important of His signs is the Night and Day:

“Indeed your Rabb is Allah, who created the Heavens and the Earth in six days, and then He rose over (Istawa) The Throne (in a manner befitting His Majesty). He brings the Night as a cover over the Day, seeking it rapidly, and (He created) the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars subjected to His command. Surely His is the creation and the Commandment. Blessed is Allah the Rabb of all in existence!”

[Surah A’raf 7:54]

Allah means the One who has all rights of worship over the entire creation. He created us for the sole purpose of His worship alone (i.e. Tawheed, without ascribing any partners to Him in any respect of worship, that is, Shirk).

As Allah says:
“I have not created the Jinn, nor the men, except for My worship (alone).

[Surah Dhariyat 51:56]


Allah has required upon us total disbelief in everything that is worshipped other than Allah (Taaghut) and having Eman (faith) in Allah alone.

As Allah says:
“There is no compulsion in religion. Surely, the right path has become clear and distinct from the wrongpath. So whoever disbelieves in Taaghut (everything that is worshipped other than Allah) and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trust worthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.”

[Surah Baqarah 2:256]

Belief in Allah and knowing your Rabb is the first pillar and article of Eman, so it is compulsory on us to know who our Rabb is.
